The hand is made up of 27 bones — including the metacarpals that form your palm and the phalanges that make up your fingers. When one of these bones breaks, from a fall, a sports collision, a workplace accident, or a direct impact, the healing process needs to be carefully guided to prevent stiffness, tendon adhesions, and loss of grip strength.

What happens after a hand fracture?

The bones themselves often heal within 4–6 weeks, but the real work — recovering full range of motion, grip strength, and the fine motor control you rely on every day — takes longer and depends a lot on what you do during and after immobilization. Start moving too early and you risk disrupting the healing bone. Wait too long and the joints stiffen, the tendons tighten, and getting full function back becomes a much harder fight. The goal is getting that balance right, and that's where specialized hand therapy comes in.

Who comes to us for hand fracture rehab?

We see patients after boxing and sports injuries, falls, workplace accidents, car accidents, and post-fixation surgeries — whether that's a pin, plate, or screw. Some come to us directly after immobilization. Others come after surgery and are cleared to start therapy. Many come in saying their doctor discharged them but the hand still doesn't feel right. We work with wherever you are in the process.

How do we treat it at Reach Beyond Therapy?

At Reach Beyond Therapy, every session is one-on-one — just you and your therapist, no aides, no rushing, no shortened sessions, and no shared appointments with other clients. We start with where you are — whether that's still in a protective splint, freshly out of immobilization, or weeks post-op. From there, we work on edema control, scar management if needed, progressive mobilization of the joints, tendon gliding to prevent adhesions, and a carefully staged return to grip strength and functional activity. We coordinate with your surgeon's protocol and move at the pace your tissue allows.
