The tendons in your hand connect muscles to bones and allow your fingers and thumb to move with precision and power. Flexor tendons run along the palm side and let you bend your fingers; extensor tendons run along the back of the hand and let you straighten them. These tendons can be injured from deep lacerations, forced stretching, sports impacts, or avulsion — where the tendon pulls away from where it attaches to the bone.

What happens with a tendon injury?

Tendon injuries range from partial tears that can be treated conservatively to complete ruptures that require surgical repair before rehab can begin. Even after a repair, the tendon needs to be carefully reintroduced to motion and load — too little movement and it heals with adhesions that limit glide; too much too soon and you risk re-rupture. The protocol and timing are everything, and they need to be managed by someone who understands hand tendons specifically.

Who comes to us for tendon injuries?

We see kitchen injuries from knife lacerations, climbing injuries from pulley and tendon strains and ruptures, sports injuries from forced bending, and post-surgical patients after tendon repair procedures. We also see people who sustained a tendon injury that was treated elsewhere but didn't progress as expected and need a fresh evaluation and approach. If a finger isn't bending or straightening the way it should after an injury, that's worth getting looked at by a specialist.

How do we treat it at Reach Beyond Therapy?

At Reach Beyond Therapy, every session is one-on-one — just you and your therapist, no aides, no rushing, no shortened sessions, and no shared appointments with other clients. Tendon rehab is exacting work that requires a therapist who knows the protocols inside and out — when to start motion, how much tension is safe at each stage, and how to progress toward full functional strength without compromising the repair. We fabricate custom splints specific to your injury, guide you through the gliding exercises that prevent adhesion formation, manage any scar tissue that develops, and progress you toward grip strength and full function over a carefully monitored timeline.
